Pointe Praise Team

Have you ever wondered why we sing at church? It doesn’t bother me at all because music is an important part of my life, but how many other events do we go to that involve singing as a group? There are the sporting events with “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”, and of course we often sing along when we go to a concert, but few other events involve singing as a group. I don’t often see coworkers joining in chorus before they begin their shift or couples beginning their dates with a duet. So, why DO we sing in church?

There are three reasons that I’ve discovered that give us reason to sing each Sunday and provide direction as we choose what songs to sing.

  1. Music is a part of our culture. While we may not sing as a group everywhere we go, music is all around us. We hear it playing in the stores, restaurants, amusement parks, in the car, and on TV. It’s a language that we all speak. As we sing, it creates a sense of unity.
  2. Music sticks with us. Most of the time, I don’t remember what was said on a TV commercial, but I do remember it if they used a catchy tune. My guess is you remember it, too. I hope the music that is a part of our Sunday gathering will go with us throughout the week. We’ll remember some of the words that we sing, and find them encouraging us as we live our daily lives.
  3. Singing is a way of communicating with God. Psalm 147:1 says, “It is good to sing praises to our God.” God delights in our singing, and I find that as we sing, He speaks to us as well.

At Vantage Pointe we have found music by artists such as Elevation, Hillsong, Bethel Music, Vertical Worship and more to be culturally relevant for our journey through life. As we struggle each day to walk in a world of hurt and pain, we have found songs that are uplifting and give us strength for the days ahead. We hope to see you soon here at Vantage Pointe.
